4 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner

4 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner

In South Africa, there are a few things we need to make it through summer. Cold beverages, hats, sunscreen and a reliable air conditioning system. An air conditioner can make your life comfortable but how do you know if your aircon is still doing its job as best as it should?

Maybe you’ve noticed that it isn’t cooling your home like it did before or perhaps it makes strange noises when turned on. Like any other appliance, your air conditioner won’t last forever and eventually would need replacing. While you might get extra miles from regular maintenance, even the best-maintained air conditioner will run into problems after a while. Below are some signs that you need to replace your aircon.

#1 Higher than normal energy bills

The more you use your aircon, the higher your monthly bill will be but if you notice a steep increase in your electricity bill, you might want to investigate. Most aircon units become less energy efficient when they reach the end of their lifespan since they have to work harder to cool the air.

#2 Frequent Air Conditioner Repairs

If you need to constantly get professionals out to repair your air conditioning unit, it might be time to replace it. It’s better to replace your unit than having to pay for repairs multiple times per year. Read here: Why it’s important to do regular air conditioning service and maintenance.

#3 Strange noises and smells

Optimal functioning air conditioning units operate almost silently. If your aircon all of a sudden makes strange noises, such as grinding, screeching or rattling, you need to act fast. Same goes for smells – unusual smells could mean the ductwork has become mouldy or the insulation has become damaged.

#4 Excess moisture

A small amount of condensation moisture is normal but if you notice a sudden increase or a leak inside your home, it’s time to replace your aircon unit.
